Right then, week 2....
Well today we had a very exciting/terrifying day, but you will have to skip to the end to see what that's all about!....
So its been about a week since we last did a post..... its probably more, but we ar
e quite happy loosing track of time so
week 2 will have to do!
Our last post was was for the 5th of october, we had just got the car back after breaking down again.
6th
Well we have just had
a comparatively luxurious couple of
days in a fancy hotel in northern swakopmund over looking the Atlantic ocean, it was lovely compared to the roof tent on top of our 4x4.
Anyway, we leave the town bright and early to head north. 400 miles away is etosha national park. We have left a leisurely 2 days to
get there as we have a pre booked campsite halfway
between, to break up the journey, should be fun!..... 80 miles out...... the car starts playing up AGAIN!!!!!..... it coughs, farts then dies..... arse.
As we come to a rolling stop, we start to pull off the road..... as the car leans over to the left..... it starts again...... so we immediately pull back into the road.... 5 seconds later it dies, we pull off, it starts again..... it appears as though what ever the problem is, if the car leans over..... it will work, this makes the 60 miles back to swakop some what int
eresting, not only for us but the cars following us!..... as every 100 yards we have to swerve onto the road to avoid posts in the hard should
er, then back again, half on the road, half on the gravel.
Meanwhile Lorraine phones up the rental place, and they agree its about time they replace the car! Brilliant!!!.... only it will take them 5 hours to get to us..... arse.
After this interesting drive, we struggle back into town, and back to the now very familiar repair center.
Here we wait for our "new" 4x4 to arrive...... (5hrs later...) I say new..... our rental guy arrives in a toyota hilux..... similar to the ones you see on the news in afganistan with the taliban driving around in with an RPG launcher on the back. its about 20 years old, no rear seatbelts, no airbags, and a dashboard that looks suspiciously like the one in my first car... (toyota starlet!)... in fact im sure it is! anyway, its got 300'000 miles on the clock, but its a runner, unlike the new one
we had been struggling with for the last few days. begrudgingly, we agree and we swap all the gear over and we are on our way
Its now 4pm, theres no way we will make it to our campsite now, so we try to get to see a seal colony..... 80 miles away.... only it closes at 5pm..... we arrive just in time 4.59, just as the woman is closing up. lorraine jumps out and smiles and pleads with the woman, "YOU WONT BELIEVE OUR DAY!!" she gives her a hug and she lets us in......
Oh my god.... the smell..... its quite something....... and it sounds like a farmyard... with snorts from pigs, sheep and cows.... its quite odd....
Its now getting dark, so we decide to get
to the nearest campsite on the beach. We arrive to find the campsite/reception completely deserted.... i mean literally, doors swinging in the wind, broken windows, sand blowing round the floor of the paint peeling reception block. We are completely alone, with nowhere to go, miles from anywhere..... so we mange to "find our way in" and set up camp....
That night the stars are quite amazing! we decide to get up at dawn to get on our way to Etosha as it will now take most of the day to get there.... (have i mentioned that all the roads are rough gravel, full of holes you could park a fiesta in......).
Well that took somewhat longer than expected, sorry to cut this short guys, but we have to go to bed as we have another long day ahead of us. Just to keep you interested..... today we went walking in the bush miles from anywhere.... only to find ourselves yards away from some lions...... thats right.... on foot, no car. (we did have a guide!).....
anyway, until next time
Will and Loz xxx
